The second of the three new Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Royal Brunei Navy was launched in June 2001 at BAE Systems shipyard on the Clyde at Glasgow.
Each of the 2,000 tonnes displacement vessels are powered by four MAN Diesel Ltd, Ruston twenty cylinder RK270 engines producing a total of 30,200 kWb at 1032 r/min to provide a speed of more than 30 knots. The engines are mounted in pairs, port and star- board, and drive their respective propellers and shafting via a flexible coupling, shaft and gearbox. All Ruston marine engines comply with the IMO Marpol Annex VI emission Regulations whilst providing class leading fuel consumption and minimised maintenance costs.
The ships have a large helideck, which can service and refuel a helicopter deployed for maritime operations. The main role of the OPV's will be littoral operations, protecting Brunei's offshore oil industry and safeguarding the nation's territorial integrity.
Ruston engines are in service with navies throughout the world for propulsion and on- board power generation applications. Recent installations include the latest generation of landing ship tanks as well as offshore patrol vessels, hydrographic survey ships, amphibi- ous helicopter carriers and a fast sealift catamaran.
