Stockport, 25 November 2002. The world beating VP185 range of engines includes the 18VP185 configuration, the most powerful engine in its class. Re-engineered for the Rail Traction market the engine is the solution for the next generation of low axle weight high-speed trains (HST’s) for the UK and global markets.
This compact lightweight engine provides 3,100 kWb (4,155 bhp) at 1,800 rpm. Ensuring that it can power either 100 tonne four-axle locomotives or push-pull type HST power cars weighing in the region of 70 tonnes at speeds required by the industry, whilst minimising track access charges. The high power to weight ratio contributes to impressive acceleration and provides multi-stop passenger services with decreased journey times by quickly achieving maximum speeds. The engine is capable of providing ample power to achieve speeds of 125mph as well as the proposed future speeds of 140mph. This engine is also available at 1,500rpm and provides 2,800 kWb (3,753 bhp).
Day in, day out reliability is a critical performance indicator and the operating experience of the VP185 has proved excellent, with over 750,000 running hours aggregated across all applications. Individual engines in Australia have run for over 6,200 hours per year with outstanding availability for Countrylink who have re-engined their entire fleet to VP185 within the last two years.
